Bill Morris, 58, is now the Internet’s new ‘hero” after saving a dying dog left by his owner inside the car under the 56C steaming heat of the sun.

Being a dog lover himself, Morris saved the dog by breaking the car’s window using an ax. He did not hesitate to do it after seeing the “lifeless” body of the dog in the back seat and was just “minutes away from death”.

Morris is a Registered Firearms Dealer for Thames Valley Police and has three German pointers of his own. He expressed that he was furious when he was alerted to the situation by Samantha Harvey and her husband Eddie, concerned citizens who saw the dog overheating at the back seat of the car.

The dog’s owner had gone shopping with her young daughter in Curry’s at Newbury Retail Park in Berkshire and left the pooch for up more than 45 minutes on Monday afternoon.

If Morris was a few minutes delayed, the dog could have died.

“The little Yorkshire Terrier was very distressed. It was on its side and was heavily panting – it was leaning up against the window,” Morris shared.

“It was like it had become lifeless – its eyes were closed – it looked completely exhausted,” he added.

“The dog was minutes away from dying and I just thought ‘I need to do something here.'”

Bill expressed that he was a bit disappointed because there were people who were looking around but none of them did something to save the dog.

“I think more people just need to grow a pair of b******s and do something when something like this happens.

“When I saw the owner, she wasn’t emotional, she was just very shocked,” said Morris.

“So I asked her if she was with her young daughter and I said ‘would you keep her in the car for an hour?’ She said ‘no’,” Morris shared.

Bill told the owner that there are numerous posts in the Internet expressing the grudge and disappointment to owners who leave their dogs inside their cars under the hot weather.

Slow response from authorities.

Bill said he initially called 999 but was put through to 101.

“I was on hold for a very long time, with the lines saying they were extremely busy and at that point I made the decision to take the law into my own hands as the minutes were running away,” he said.

“I asked Samantha to stay on the phone to the police as I went to get my ax from my car, I’m an RFD so I have all sorts with me,” Morris shared.

After getting his ax, Morris asked Samantha to be a witness to what he was about to do and Samantha filmed it for him. After breaking the car window, he went to some officers and informed them of what he did.

“When I spoke to them I said I had done something that I felt was humane but that they might think otherwise,” he shared.

A dog lover since birth.

“The police took all of my details but at no point did they charge me or caution me for a criminal offense or even say what I did was wrong,” Morris said.

As a person who has had dogs since he was four, Morris added:

“If I was in the same situation tomorrow I would do exactly the same thing. I don’t regret it.”

“I got some water and when I came back to the scene the woman who owned the car had returned with her little girl. “As someone who is ex-military, am very focused. And at that moment I knew that if I didn’t act then the dog was going to die,” Morris emphasized.

He also added that the dog should have been groomed since he was absolutely boiling with all his fur.

“People are saying that they want to buy me a pint, I’d much rather that they donated to Battersea Dog’s home or a dog’s charity instead,” he concluded.
